Harmony Within Boundaries Interreligious Communication In Sukoreno Village
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines interreligious communication practices in constructing social harmony within the multicultural society of Sukoreno Village, Jember Regency. Sukoreno Village is inhabited by diverse religious and belief communities, including Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sapta Darma, which have coexisted harmoniously in everyday social life. This research aims to analyze interreligious communication practices and the communicative actions employed by the community in maintaining social relations amid religious diversity. The study employs a qualitative approach using communication ethnography and applies Jürgen Habermas’s Theory of Communicative Action. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The findings reveal that social harmony in Sukoreno is constructed through everyday communication emphasizing social respect, community solidarity, mutual cooperation, and the avoidance of religious conflict. Community members maintain harmonious social relations without interfering in each other’s religious doctrines and ritual practices. Communication practices within the community are non-dominative and oriented toward mutual understanding in shared social life. This study introduces the concept of “harmony within boundaries,” referring to a form of social tolerance built through social communication and respect for differences while maintaining the boundaries of religious identity and belief within multicultural society.
